Zoo trip

We went to the zoo today, clearly, our favorite part was the map.

I usually don't let them get a map, but this time I caved and let them each get one.  Cecily lost interest pretty quickly, but Parker carried his around almost the entire time.

Parker is a "cowboy riding an otter"  (his imagination, not mine)

I sometimes wonder why they even have animals at the zoo?  I suppose it's just to give context to the sculptures?

Parker

Parker came home with a massive pile of homework to do over vacation (it was about 20 pages, double-sided, and theoretically "optional").  He did it all before the weekend.

This morning, I got up and found him sitting on the couch, doing a Sudoku.  Clearly, not my child.

I'm still recovering from my Christmas day sickness, and the kids clearly aren't at 100% either.  So, we downloaded the first Harry Potter book from the library and read the first 40% of the book in one day.  This is the first chapter book I've read to the kids and I wasn't sure how they'd do, but Parker LOVES it!  Cecily gets bored and has a hard time sitting still for it, but she's sat through most of it too.

Boxing Day

We headed over the Kruger Grandparent's house for Boxing Day, also known as Brain-and-Sandi-are-still-here-so-we-should-have-brunch Day.

I have no idea what Spidey & Spidey were up to, but clearly it was nothing good.

We attempted to get a shot of all 6 grandkids...

...clearly we failed.  In my defense, I forgot my camera and my phone was almost out of juice, I'm not sure what the children's excuses were.

Zoo Lights

It was cold, and almost raining, and we almost didn't go, but we did and we had a great time.  But, we didn't take many photos.

Dancing

I have absolutely no idea where he got these super-amazing dance moves.

Yes, it's sideways, cell phones, sorry.  Turn your head & watch it, all the way to the end, I promise you, it's absolutely worth it.

Batman on the shelf, v2.0

Operation #BatmanOnAShelf is apparently expanding...
I'm now expected to hide both Batman and Spidey?!
How did I get mixed up in this?

Christmas Break!

It is (finally) the first day of Christmas Break!  Keith took Wednesday-Friday off to hang out with the family, so we celebrated by going to the Rusty Pelican for breakfast.

Parker had already eaten breakfast by the time we got there (10am), so he had toasted cheese.

In the afternoon, we went to see "Sing" with a bunch of Parker's friends from school.  I didn't get a photo, but it was pretty fun, we had 9 boys age 6 - 10, we took over an entire row.

After that, we headed over to Bellevue to see the lights at the Botanical Gardens.

We got there right when it opened at 4:30, so it wasn't super dark out, but we still really enjoyed the lights.

It's smaller than I remember, we were done in about 20 minutes, but the lights are amazing, and the kids had a great time.  Plus, that was probably about all the kids could handle, seeing how we came straight from the movie and didn't bring hats or gloves (or even a coat for Cecily)

The kids wanted Red Robin for dinner, so we headed over to Bellevue Square.  What a disaster...  After spending forever getting there, parking, and wandering through the mall to get to the restaurant, the wait to get your name ON THE WAITING LIST was over 10 minutes long.  So, we drove over to Crossroads, and waited 15 seconds for an open table.

Sparkly Tees

I made Cecily & her friend matching t-shirts

Sophie wasn't really interested in getting her photo taken, so you'll just have to trust me, they were adorable.

Batman on a Shelf

Parker has this random little Lego Batman who doesn't appear to have a home, so I'm constantly moving him out of my way.

Apparently this is now one of our "Christmas things" that we do!?

"Mama, did you hide my Batman yet? You hide it every day, right?"

...um, sure kid.

At least it's not elf on a shelf, I guess

Merry Christmas from the Krugers!

Merry Christmas from the Kruger family!

Wow, look at that, another year, another Christmas Letter.  I’m totally turning into my Mother here, but these years go faster & faster every year.

Cecily turned 4 this summer and continues to be our “spirited child”.  I was excited for her to turn four and round the emotional-basket-case-corner, but so far, four is turning out even more emotional-wreckage-y than three (who knew it was possible?!)  We currently have Cecily in full-day Pre-K 2 days a week, with an additional half-day on Mondays.  She enjoys school once she’s there, but she does not love it the way her brother did.  She does certainly seem to enjoy her Tuesdays & Thursdays at home with Mama’s undivided attention.  In the spring, we signed Cecily up for ballet.  She loved the class and especially loved the sparkly tutu she got for the recital.  After the Summer Olympics, Cecily decided to switch to gymnastics, so we’ve been doing gymnastics once a week since October.  Cecily loves all things fancy & sparkly, and she loves playing with babies and her friends.  Like good Gen-X parents, we try not to pigeon-hole our children into society’s confining gender roles; our children, on the other hand, seem perfectly happy in their traditional roles.  This summer, Keith was trying to play with both kids in the backyard.  Keith & Parker were kicking the soccer ball around the yard, but every time the ball went near Cecily, she’d grab it and say “Here’s the Daddy ball, and here’s the Mama ball, and this is the baby ball ‘wahh, wahh!’”

Parker turned six this summer and is officially a “big kid”.  He loved his last few months of Pre-K this spring and started Kindergarten in September at our local school.  Parker LOVES school.  Parker loves everything about school, he’s made several new friends and he loves all the routine, rules, and activities involved in being a Kindergartener.  Parker continues to love all things sports related, and after an evening at his friend’s house he recently discovered that you can watch BOTH the Seahawks AND the Huskies play football on the TV (who knew?).  As long as no one tells him about baseball on the TV, I think we’re good.  Parker played T-ball this spring and had a blast.  As a leftie with a decent arm, we have big plans for his future in baseball, I’m just not so sure I’m ready to give up 2-3 evenings a week of my time to watch him play!  Parker is our rules & plans kid, he loves playing any sort of game, giving him a constant refrain of “Mama, can you play a game with me, Mama can you play?”  He also loves structure; the other night, he told me his plan: “Step 1: put on my pajamas, Step 2: Go to Bed, Step 3: Go to Sleep, Step 4: Wake Up, Step 5: Have breakfast…”  We have many days with such detailed plans, he’s a boy after my plan-loving heart.

This summer, I started watching my brother’s daughter, Fiona, during the day while everyone is at work, and I continue to watch her before & after school as she & Parker are in Kindergarten at the same school.  The three cousins very quickly moved from cousins-behavior to sibling-behavior.  They have a lot of fun playing together, and they have a lot of fun fighting together.  It has been great for the kids to have their cousin around, but having that third body in the house every day has officially stamped a “NO” on the whole “should we or shouldn’t we have another baby?” conversation.  In anticipation of Fiona “joining” our family, we finally became official parents and bought ourselves a Grey Honda Odyssey mini-van.  This car is the joy of my life, and at least for the first few weeks it made getting the kids ready & out the door infinitely easier “who wants to ride in the mini van?” “Me, Me, Me, let me get my shoes on and run downstairs!”  Sadly, this novelty has worn off in the past few months, but carting 2-6 kids around has become infinitely easier since we got the van and I try to fill it as often as possible.

Keith is still working at the same engineering firm downtown (I think this statement will just be copied & pasted into every Christmas letter from now to eternity).  He continues to move into management, this year has had some growing pains, but he’s turning into an amazing leader in his company…whether he wants to our not!  In June, Keith & I celebrated our 10 year anniversary!  We had big plans of taking a big vacation for our 10-year; but once it came time to plan it, I realized that anything less than a 10-day Caribbean cruise was just going to feel like settling. So, we ended up sending the kids to Grandma’s for a few nights and had a mini-stay-cation at home, then went up to Bellingham for a night.  Maybe next year we’ll combine my 40th and our 11th Anniversary for a big trip, we’ll see.

This has been an interesting year for me, I have one kid in Elementary and one in Preschool.  I’ve let go of most of my Preschool responsibilities but haven’t yet stepped up to any Elementary responsibilities.  When everyone asked me what I was going to do when both kids were in school semi-full-time, my response has always been “Nothing, I fully intend to sit around the house reading magazines.”  Well, I don’t seem to be getting much done, but that magazine stack doesn’t seem to be getting any smaller either.  Honestly, I sometimes wonder what I do with my days, but they do seem pretty busy?!  I have greatly enjoyed having a few minutes to myself and luxuriating in the wonder of going to Costco ALL ALONE. In the spring, I did start selling Norwex (all-natural cleaning products), but by “selling” what I really mean is “buying all sorts of stuff for myself at a discount”, so maybe not my next career. On October 19th, after a lengthy fight with Alzheimer’s, my (Julie’s) Mom went to be with Jesus.  It’s been a long journey and we’ve done plenty of grieving over the past 10 years, so the loss isn’t super acute, but it still feels different to know she’s not around.  We had a lovelyservice in November and it was a joy to see so many people from my childhood come to celebrate my Mom.

This summer, we took the motor home out for several adventures.  On our first outing of the season, the deadbolt managed to break itself in the locked position, leaving us to get in & out through the driver’s door (in the pouring rain, what kind of weirdo camps over Memorial Day in the PNW?).  Never a lack of adventures when you motorhome!  We took it over to Lake Wenatchee for a few days in August (more rain), and a few weeks later, took our longest “road trip” so far, leaving Skagit Valley at 9pm and driving straight to Brian’s house in Beaverton, Oregon, arriving at 2am for our niece, Amber’s 1st birthday party.  In retrospect, not the brightest plan ever, but there’s only so many weekends in summer and we were determined to squeeze every last moment out of them.

We hope that this letter finds you well with prayers for a Merry Christmas and a Peaceful New Year!

With love from the Krugers:
Keith, Julie, Parker (6), & Cecily (4)

Pig Tails

Cecily does not let me put pig tails in her hair often, so I always have to take a photo when she does.

Parker's Christmas Concert

Parker decided to join the kid's choir at Church for Christmas this year.  He was nervous about joining initially, but once he got going, he was pretty excited.

We practiced the songs every waking moment, and he wore his fanciest work clothes to Church on Sunday.

So, naturally, he stood there looking uncomfortable for much of the program.  Not unlike the last program he was in, four years ago (if you're looking for an adorable trip down memory lane, I highly recommend you go back to my post from back then & watch tiny Parker & tiny Wesley sing "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star")

That said, he had a great time, and we were prodigiously proud of him.

Not to be left out, the girls made their own dance party as well:

Overreact much?

This little one is trying to put the magnets on the refrigerator. When one popped off, she yelled "Aaargh, everything I touch turns into a DISASTER!"

Another Friday's plans, down the tubes

Cecily woke up Friday morning, 3:30am, screaming & clutching her ear.  She cried & whimpered for several hours, then about 8am, she threw up and then went back to bed.

Fortunately, I was able to have a friend come & hang out at our house while I took the big kids to school and Cecily slept.

We went to the Dr in the afternoon, got a prescription, and by the end of the day she was feeling much better.

I'm just glad I'd managed to finish (and start) my Christmas shopping on Wednesday rather than waiting for Friday!

Swanson's Santa

It's not Christmas with 14,000 trips to Swanson's to see the reindeer and trains.  This year, they have a special yurt for Santa photos, but if you time it right, you get there when Santa's just hanging out by the trains.  On this visit, Santa had his doggie with him.

I think Fiona was more excited about the dog than Santa.

It took Parker a while to work up the courage to be in the same breathing space as the dog, but he really wanted to talk to Santa.

Santa decided Mama needed a photo too (it's out of focus, Parker took the photo)

Then, on to the "Christmas tree maze"

It's not actually a maze, but it's where the hay maze is in the fall and it's the same concept, so it works.   The bulk of my photos are like this:

So, you can tell the kids loved it.

As we were leaving, I was handing out the candy canes Santa had given them.  One was broken, so I told them that broken candy canes are the sweetest. Soon they were competing to see who's was the most broken.
Everyone once in a while I get a win.

Date Night

Every year, Keith gets invited to the Kemper Freeman Holiday party in Bellevue.  I've never been able to go before, but this was the year!  We knew all of 2 people there, but that doesn't matter, we were there for the food!

It was amazing: poke bowls, salmon, flat iron steak, dumpling bar, mac & cheese bar, open bar :), you name it, we ate it.  It was a fun evening, thank you Bellevue's urban development!

Costco

My friend and I have started the habit of going to Costco after MOPS.  It's pretty handy, the three kids distract each other and we can actually shop in peace.  Sophie decided that she wanted to ride in my cart and would not move for anything.  Eventually we were just piling groceries on top of her, but she seemed happy with it.

Cecily & Xavi were sharing a smoothie.
These three children have more than enough personality between them, but somehow they all get along amazingly well.
